What's the Best Option for Learning French: Individual Tutoring, Group Classes, Conversational Workshops, or Self-learning?

Are You ready to take your French skills to the next level but unsure which learning format suits you best?

Whether you thrive with personalized attention, enjoy the dynamics of group learning, or prefer honing your conversational skills in a workshop setting, there's a learning option tailored to your needs.

At UpYourFrench, we understand that choosing the right learning format is crucial for success.

Let's delve deeper into the characteristics and advantages of each format to help you make an informed decision.

How Can We Choose the Right French Learning Experience?

Group Classes of French:

(les cours collectifs ou cours en groupe)

group class online

Advantages of following classes in group:

  • Social Interaction:

Group courses offer many opportunities for social interaction. Interacting with other learners, participating in group activities and practising speaking with peers can enhance your learning experience. Some students may ask questions that you hadn't thought of, but which will be useful to you. Helping others is an excellent way of learning and consolidating your knowledge.

  • Structured Curriculum:

Group classes often follow a structured syllabus, providing a clear path for language progression. This structured approach ensures that you cover essential language skills in a systematic manner. Of course, in one-to-one lessons, progression is also based on a curriculum, but in a group, no dead ends are possible ;).

  • Cost-Effective:

Group classes are typically more affordable than individual tutoring, making them a cost-effective option for language learners on a budget. This makes sense, a part of the preparation work and class time is shared by several students.

Considerations before choosing group courses:

  • Not only Personal Time:

In a larger group, the instructor's attention is divided among participants. While group interaction is beneficial, you may receive less personalized feedback compared to individual classes. Individual speaking time is also necessarily reduced because it is shared by several people.

That's why at UpYourFrench we only accept 4 people per group. This ensures rich interaction while giving everyone maximum speaking time.

  • Fixed Schedule:

Group classes operate on a set schedule, which may not always align with your availability. Consider whether the class times fit into your schedule before enrolling. At UpYourFrench, we try to offer times that suit as many people as possible (late afternoon or lunchtime), so don't hesitate to let me know if you'd like me to open up other time slots.

  • Diverse Learning Pace and Styles:

Group dynamics can vary, impacting the pace and style of learning. Be prepared to adapt to different learning styles within the group setting.

At UpYourFrench:

For the time being, we offer two level groups: Speak Up A2 and Strengthen Up B1. The entire level is covered over one year, within 3 sessions. (september-december / january-april / april-jun)

Each session is organised as follows

- 2 times a week (2 times an hour for level A2, 2 times an hour and a half for level B1)

- 2 x 5 weeks with a break in between for individual assessment

- an individual mid-term and final consultation with each student.

1-to-1 or Individual Classes for Learning French:

(les cours individuels ou cours privés)

1 to 1 class

Advantages of individual classes:

  • Personalized Attention:

With individual tutoring, you'll benefit from one-on-one attention from the instructor. This personalized approach allows for tailored feedback and customized lessons, ensuring that your specific pace and learning needs are met.

  • Flexible Schedule:

Individual classes often offer flexibility in scheduling, allowing you to choose the timing and frequency of your sessions. Whether you prefer weekly sessions or a more intensive schedule, we'll work with you to create a plan that fits your lifestyle. This flexibility accommodates busy lifestyles and ensures that learning fits seamlessly into your schedule.

  • Focused Learning:

Individual classes enable you to concentrate on specific areas where you need improvement. Whether it's grammar, pronunciation, or vocabulary, you can focus your efforts on honing particular language skills.

Considerations before choosing individual classes:

  • Cost:

While individual classes offer personalized attention, they can be more expensive than group classes. Consider your budget when weighing this option.

  • Isolation:

Some learners may find it challenging to stay motivated without the social aspect of group learning. If you thrive on interaction and camaraderie, individual classes may feel isolating.

If you prefer social interaction and thrive in a group setting, individual classes may not provide the social interaction you desire.

At UpYourFrench:

For individual lessons, you can choose between a single lesson of one (€40) or a pack of 10 one-hour sessions valid for 3 months (€350).

Conversational Workshops of French:

(les ateliers de conversation)

speaking workshop

Advantages of practing in conversational workshop:

  • Focused on Speaking:

Conversational workshops prioritize practical conversation skills, providing an immersive environment for language practice. Engaging in discussions, role-playing, and real-life scenarios enhances your conversational fluency.

  • Interactive:

These workshops offer interactive learning experiences, allowing you to actively participate in conversations and activities. Immediate interaction with peers and instructors helps refine your speaking skills.

  • Feedback:

Receive immediate feedback on your speaking skills from both peers and instructors. This feedback loop accelerates your progress and builds confidence in spoken French.

Considerations before choosing conversational workshop:

  • Supplemental Learning:

Conversational workshops are most effective when combined with other language learning methods. While they emphasize speaking skills, supplementing with grammar and vocabulary study ensures a well-rounded approach to language acquisition.

  • Varied Proficiency Levels:

Workshops may include learners with different proficiency levels, from beginners to advanced speakers. Embrace the diversity of the group and learn from peers at varying stages of their language journey. At UpYourFrench, we offer two workshop levels: intermediate: Up your Chats (A2-B1) and advanced: Up your Fluency (B1-B2). The topics of conversation are the same but the material is adapted for each level.

  • Availability:

Check the workshop schedule to ensure it aligns with your availability. Consistent participation is key to reaping the benefits of conversational practice. That's why we also offer packs of 5 workshops valid for two months. You can choose only the subjects that interest you.

At UpYourFrench:

We offer two levels of conversation workshops:

Learning French on Your Own (Self-directed path):

apprendre seul

studying at the Library

Advantages of Self Learning:

  • Personalized Pace and Flexibility:

When learning independently, you can set your own pace. You're not bound by a fixed curriculum or class schedule. This flexibility allows you to progress at a speed that suits your learning style and commitments. You choose when and where to study. This flexibility suits those with busy schedules or irregular routines. Whether you prefer studying early in the morning, during lunch breaks, or late at night, you have the freedom to tailor your study sessions to fit your lifestyle.

  • Autonomy:

Self learners take ownership of their progress. You decide what resources to use, which topics to focus on, and how to practice. Whether it's through textbooks, online courses, language exchange apps, or immersion experiences, you have the autonomy to design your learning journey according to your preferences and goals.

  • Cost-Effective:

Learning on your own can be more budget-friendly than language courses with a qualified Teacher. With an abundance of free and affordable resources available online, self-directed learners can access quality learning materials without spending much.

Disadvantages of Self-Directed Learning:

  • Lack of Structure:

Without a structured program and guidance, it's easy to miss essential components of language learning, such as grammar rules or pronunciation practice. While self-directed learning offers flexibility, it requires discipline to ensure comprehensive coverage of language skills.

  • Feedback Gap:

Self-assessment is valuable, but external feedback from teachers or peers is crucial for improvement. Without regular feedback on pronunciation, grammar accuracy, and language usage, self-directed learners may develop bad habits or misunderstandings that hinder their language development.

  • Isolation:

Learning alone can be isolating. Interaction with native speakers and other learners is limited, affecting conversational skills. Without regular opportunities for speaking practice and feedback, self-directed learners may struggle to develop fluency and confidence in real-life communication.

  • Motivation Challenges:

Staying motivated without external deadlines or accountability can be tough. Some learners lose momentum over time as they encounter obstacles or distractions. Without the support of a teacher or study group, self-directed learners may find it challenging to maintain consistent progress and enthusiasm for learning.
